T
urneffe Lodge is the original fishing lodge on the Turneffe Atoll and is surrounded by an extraordinary eco-system that is home to millions of baitfish, crabs, shrimp and other small aquatics that serve as the first link in the undersea food chain. The Atoll stretches 30 miles to the north and 10 miles wide. It encompasses over 200 mangrove islands and countless creeks and streams that provide shelter and food for a wide variety of game fish.

Before the lodge was actually constructed, anglers came from the mainland to Turneffe Atoll to fish for a day or two at a time. Over the years, they became convinced that not only should and offshore lodge be built, but that it should be on the Southern tip, strategically placed in the most productive area to take advantage of the best wading flats, unquestionably the best permit habitat and nearly all of the famous tarpon fishing spots. Just minutes away from the lodge are creeks that are home to snook, barracuda, cubera, snappers and many species of hard-fighting jacks.

Bonefish:
Whether you are wading or your guide is poling the flats, large numbers schools of bonefish are a common occurrence along the miles of hard coral and soft grass flats on either side of the southern end of Turneffe Atoll.

Bonefish are mainly in the 3 to 6 pound range but if you move out the schooling fish and work on the backsides of the flats your will find much larger fishes. Look for the singles and doubles and you'll see some 10 to 12 pounders.

If you've not enjoyed the experienced of catching a bonefish on a fly, you are missing one of the truly great sporting experiences. If conventional tackle is your preference, you will find the encounter just as rewarding as fly fishing.

Permit

Permits:
One of the greatest challenges of the flats fishing world is the permit. Huge schools of 200 or more fish resides in the water just offshore.

Permits invade the flats as the tide rises and the schools spreads out to comb the grass flats and shoals to look for crabs, shrimp and small baitfish. Fly fishing is the preferred method for permits.

The permits range in size from 8 to 12 pounds up to bruisers over 30 pounds. Permit fishing is good all year.

Tarpons:
The silver king provides an exciting early morning challenge for fly and spin anglers. Tarpon season begins in March and last well into October with the summer months being the peak season. Tarpon holes are abundant due to the large numbers of creeks and lagoons that are present on the Atoll. The average catch will be 60 to 90 pounds with larger catches ranging between 100 to 130 pounds. Most casting is to the sound of rolling Tarpon as they come up in early morning to feed. There are also resident Tarpon in the creeks all year long.

Your guide will be at the dock at 8:00am and ready to leave for fishing at 8:30am. He will load your gear in the boat with plenty of cold water, any special drinks you have ordered and delicious lunch if you are planning to stay out all day. Lunch is served everyday in the dining room as many guest prefers coming in for lunch and getting out of the sun for an hour or so. The fishing areas are relatively close so no precious time would be wasted. Around 5:00pm fishing ends for the day.
